Dan Nielsen is a native of Washington State.
He received his undergraduate degree in Accounting
from Central Washington University. He earned a Masters
of Business Administration degree from University
of Nevada, Las Vegas in 1992. Mr. Nielsen has been
in law enforcement since 1975. He began his career
in the U.S. Army as a Military Police Investigator.
Following his military service, Mr. Nielsen served
as a Police Officer with the Seattle Police Department.
He served as a patrolman with that department for
seven years. Upon receiving his undergraduate degree,
Mr. Nielsen began service with the FBI.
Since entering on duty with the FBI in 1986, Mr. Nielsen
has had several assignments. His first office of assignment
was Las Vegas where he worked organized crime matters,
specializing in labor racketeering. It was in Las Vegas
that Mr. Nielsen earned his certification as a Technically
Trained Agent. Mr. Nielsen was transferred to Los Angeles
in 1992. Mr. Nielsen was one of four agents assigned
to the civil rights investigation into the beating
of Rodney King by members of the Los Angeles Police
Department.
In 1997, Mr. Nielsen was promoted to Supervisory Special
Agent at FBI Headquarters within the Computer Intrusions
Unit, now a part of the Cyber Division. In 1999, Mr.
Nielsen was transferred to Indianapolis to supervise
the White Collar Crime program. After three successful
years in that program, Mr. Nielsen briefly served as
the Violent Crimes Supervisor. The last two years of
his service in Indianapolis were spent between Acting
Assistant Special Agent in Charge and supervising a
newly established Cyber Crimes Squad. In 2004, Mr.
Nielsen was promoted to Assistant Special Agent in
Charge of the Portland Division.
