FBI Releases Preliminary 2007 Crime Stats for Oregon and Washington

Today, the FBI released a preliminary report detailing January - December 2007 crime data based on the submissions of 12,032 law enforcement agencies in the U.S. Each of these agencies had to submit at least six comparable months of data to the Uniform Crime Reporting (UCR) Program in both 2006 and 2007. Statistics from the report include the following:

  • Portland saw significant decreases in rapes (4.4%), aggravated assaults (6.7%), and burglaries (11.8%) in 2007 compared to 2006. Portland had a slight increase in murders (20 to 22) and an increase in motor vehicle thefts (6.5%). The other categories saw changes of less than a percentage point.
  • Eugene saw a decrease in murders (3 to 1), larceny-thefts (5%) and motor vehicle thefts (10.4%). Eugene had increases in rapes (25%), robberies (16.8%), aggravated assaults (12.5%), and burglaries (5%).
  • Salem saw decreases in almost every category including murders (9 to 3), rapes (22%), aggravated assaults (18.6%), burglaries (14.8%), and larceny-thefts (11.5%) There was a slight increase in robberies (1.5%) and an increase in motor vehicle thefts (7.3%).
  • Outside of Oregon, Vancouver saw increases in the number of murders (4 to 7), rapes (14.6%), robberies (19.4%), and motor vehicle thefts (3.1%). The other categories saw changes of less than a percentage point.

Note: the raw numbers of murders and, in some cases rapes, are so small, that any increase or decrease is going to tend to show as a large percentage.

The FBI's Uniform Crime Reporting Program collects data on the following crimes: murder, forcible rape, robbery, aggravated assault, burglary, larceny-threat, and motor vehicle thefts.

Final figures for all cities during 2007 will be available in October 2008.

This preliminary report does not contain data for cities in Oregon smaller than those listed above. The FBI simply compiles the information as it is provided from local jurisdictions. You will need to contact those local jurisdictions for any analysis of the numbers listed above. You can view and download the entire report from the FBI's web site at www.fbi.gov.
