FBI Releases U.S. Crime Statistics
Today, the FBI released its annual Crime in the United States report for American cities. Nationwide, violent crime fell for the first time since 2005. The drop was 0.7%. Property crime was down 1.4%, the fifth straight year of declines in that broad category. Overall, each of the seven specific offense categories—from aggravated assault to murder—was down from 2006.
Some highlights from the Pacific Northwest include:
- Oregon’s violent crime rate increased by 3.9%, but its property crime rate decreased by 2.8%.
- Washington’s violent crime rate declined by 2.6%, and its property crime rate declined by 9%.
- In Portland, the rates for rape, robbery, aggravated assault, burglary, and larceny-theft were all down. The rate for murders (up from 20 to 22) and motor vehicle thefts (up from 4,478 to 4,768) were up.
- In Eugene, the rates for murders, larceny-thefts, and motor vehicle thefts were down, while all other categories were up.
- In Salem, all categories showed decreases in crimes except for robbery (up 129 to 132) and motor vehicle thefts (up 831 to 892), which were up.
- In Vancouver, all categories saw increases in crimes, except for larceny-theft which was fairly unchanged.
The FBI's Uniform Crime Reporting Program collects data on the following crimes: murder, forcible rape, robbery, aggravated assault, burglary, larceny-threat, and motor vehicle thefts. More than 17,700 city, county and state law enforcement agencies voluntarily submit data to this nationwide, cooperative statistical effort.

The FBI simply compiles the information as it is provided from local jurisdictions. You will need to contact those local jurisdictions for any analysis of the numbers listed above. Also note that the report features a prominent message cautioning against using the statistics to rank cities or counties. Such rankings can lead to simplistic or incomplete analyses, overlooking the many variables impacting crime and its reporting. The Oregon and Washington crime tables are attached to this release, or you can download the entire report from the FBI's web site at www.fbi.gov.
