Over the years, the Portland Division has had a number
of fugitives on the FBI’s Ten Most Wanted Fugitives
list, including three of the first men added:
#1 – Thomas
James Holden was the first
person placed on the list for fleeing Chicago after
he was charged with
killing his wife and her brothers. FBI agents arrested
him in Beaverton, Oregon a few weeks later.
#6
- Omar August Pinson escaped
from the Oregon State Penitentiary in May 1949 while
serving a life sentence
for killing an Oregon state trooper. He was re-captured
in South Dakota about a year-and-a-half later.
#7 – Orba
Elmer Jackson
walked away from a Kansas prison in 1947 while serving
time for assault and armed robbery.
He was placed on the Top Ten list in March 1950, and
FBI agents arrested him two days later when a citizen
identified him after reading a story in the Portland
Oregonian.
Other Top Ten Notables:
#42 – Lawson
David Shirk Butler was placed on the list on January
22, 1953 and arrested
on April 21, 1953 in Los Angeles. Charge: Unlawful
flight to avoid confinement for assault and armed robbery
out of Salem, Oregon.
#110 – David
Lynn Thurston was placed on the list January 8, 1959
and captured
on February 6, 1959 in New York City after attempting
to rob a restaurant in the Broadway district. He was
caught by police after a chase through theater crowds
in the street. Charge: Unlawful flight to avoid confinement
for assault and armed robbery out of Portland.
#114 – Richard
Allen Hunt was placed on the list on May 27, 1959 and
captured
on June 2, 1959 in Thermopolis, Wyoming after a citizen
recognized his picture from a wanted poster. Charge:
Unlawful flight to avoid prosecution for kidnapping
and assault with intent to commit murder out of Brownsville,
Oregon.
#136 – Stanley
William Fitzgerald was placed on the list on September
20, 1960 and arrested
September 22, 1960 in Portland after a citizen recognized
his picture in the newspaper. Charge: Unlawful flight
to avoid prosecution for murder, robbery, and assault
out of Portland.
#154 – Richard
Laurence Marquette was placed on the list on June 29,
1961 and captured
by FBI agents in June 30, 1961 in Santa Maria, California
after a citizen recognized his photo from a wanted
poster. Charge: Unlawful flight to avoid prosecution
for murder out of Portland.
#160 – Edward
Wayne Edwards was placed on the list on November 10,
1961 and captured
January 20, 1962 in Atlanta, Georgia. Charge: Unlawful
flight to avoid confinement out of Portland.
#384 – Samuel
Marks Humphrey was placed on the list on February 29.
1984 and captured on March 22, 1984 in Portland. Charge:
Bank robbery
and unlawful flight to avoid prosecution for murder
out of Portland.
#469 – Christian
Michael Longo was placed on the list January 11, 2002
and captured
January 13, 2002 in Tulum, Mexico. Charge: Unlawful
flight to avoid prosecution for aggravated murder out
of Newport, Oregon.
